The Christian’s dual calling

The former president of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students was preaching, talking about the Christian’s dual calling: to apply Biblical truth to every area of society and to proclaim the Lorship of Christ everywhere. And it is more than a dual calling – it’s a tension that I feel keenly and is near to the heart of this blog. How should we decide how much resources to devote where? Furthermore, in addition to these callings, may we also spend time simply enjoying God’s creation and getting on with earning a living, earning our daily bread. 1 Thessalonians 4:11 exhorts us to live quielty and to mind our own affairs. When did you last hear that as a main topic for a sermon?

I am afraid that I don’t have a full answer here. “Hey, I’m one of those people who sees it as their role to raise questions”. Yes, well, perhaps – but it is easier to tear down rather than build.

    Hi Alan,
Some thoughts that immediately come to mind. There may be a danger in over-analysing this. What I mean is that one can spend more time deciding what to do in which proportions than actually doing something. Perhaps one approach is to do the things that are clearly yours to be done and trust God to (1) bring other things that he wants you to do to your to attention (using the test of confirmation from different sources, perhaps) and (2) make sure that things that He wants done are done by others if not by you.
However, I do not pretend to have any gifting in the ministry of copper-bottomed answers.
    Bob.
